the 2FA page after sign-up and the line to check
Sign-up often pushes you to a page that binds an authenticator. Read the account email and the key domain before you scan anything.
Before binding an authenticator, check that the email on the page matches the one you just signed up with, and that the long key only appears on this domain.

Key points
Read the account line first
The bind page usually shows the signed-in email or phone. Compare it character by character with what you typed at sign-up.
The key belongs to one domain
A long setup key and QR code are sensitive. Continue only if the address bar matches the download page; the same key on another domain is a warning.
Bind or remove, read the button
Buttons say bind and enable, or remove and disable. Opposite directions, and the wrong click clears an authenticator you already had.
Save backup codes before closing
Some pages show one-time backup codes right after binding. Copy them somewhere offline, then finish.
Common questions
The key on the page differs from the one in my authenticator, what now?
Do not scan yet. The account may already have another authenticator bound; open the security settings and check what is listed before changing anything.
Can I skip this and just use SMS codes?
Only if the page offers it. Take that option when shown; forcing a skip can leave the account half set up.
