Count the nodes on the bar
The top of the page or the button usually reads 1/3 or 2/4; note the total, then count how many screens you actually filled.
Read each field label word for word
Check whether the box says Email or Phone, and whether the checkbox is terms or a newsletter, instead of trusting its position.
On the code screen, check the target
The page states which email or phone number gets the code; if the last digits differ from what you typed, go back one screen.
Leave an extra field empty
Official sign-ups rarely ask for identity details beyond an invite code; if a field looks new, exit and reopen the page.
