login page looks like sign-up page and what to check first
Login and sign-up pages often share one layout, differing only in the top tab and bottom link. Check those two spots before you type a password.
The difference sits in the highlighted top tab and the bottom switch link, and both should point to the same domain.
Key points
Highlighted top tab
On a login page the top tab highlights Log in; on a sign-up page it highlights Sign up. If Sign up is highlighted but a password field appears, stop.
Bottom switch link
Login pages usually say No account yet? Sign up, and sign-up pages say Already have an account? Log in. Click it and see whether the domain matches the current page.
Prompt above the password field
A login page says Enter your password; a sign-up page says Create a password. If a sign-up page asks for an existing password, it is likely a phishing page.
Common questions
The login and sign-up pages have different domains. Is that normal?
No. On the same platform they usually sit under one main domain with different paths. Different domains means stop and check.
There is no login or sign-up tab at the top. How do I judge?
Check the address bar domain against the copyright line at the bottom. If they match, continue; if not, do not type anything.
