Where to find an app's version number and match it
The version number is the first thing to compare: check it on the store listing and again inside the app's About page. If the two differ, don't log in.
To check an exchange app's version, read the version field on the store listing and the number on the app's own About page; if they differ, the install is probably not the official build.

Start on the store listing
Open the app's page in the store and scroll to the Version field. Note the number and the update date there, not just the icon and name.
Then open About inside
In the app, go to Settings or Profile, then About. A version line is printed there; compare it character by character with the store listing.
Don't log in yet
If the two numbers differ, stop before typing any password. Uninstall, go back through the /go/ download page, and repeat the two checks.
Newer isn't the point
As long as the store listing and the About page agree, the source matches. You don't need to chase a specific number on a third-party site.
Common questions
The version has beta or test after it - is that fine?
That marks a test build. For normal checking, go back to the /go/ download page and take the regular release entry instead.
Two apps share a name in the store - how do I tell them apart?
Open each listing and compare the Version field and the developer name. The official one updates its version line more regularly.
