What a seed phrase and a private key actually are
Both restore a wallet. One is a list of words a person can write down, the other is a string a machine uses.
A seed phrase is a human-readable form of a private key: a set of words defined by BIP-39 that derives every private key in the same wallet by a fixed rule.

Why a screenshot is not a backup
A photo library syncs to the cloud, is readable by other apps, and leaves with the phone. A phrase written on paper and kept offline is the only version you hold yourself.
Common questions
Can a lost seed phrase be recovered?
No. It is the only recovery credential and no official channel can restore it. Anyone offering to is attacking you.
Can I split the phrase into parts?
You can store it however you decide, but any part that reaches someone else is the assets. Do not put it in a chat, a cloud note, or a password manager.
